Are You Thriving or Surviving?
Do you wake up every morning excited about the day ahead of you? Or, instead, do you start your workday as I did for many years, with a sense of dread?
Know that you are not alone. For many of us, worries about unfinished tasks accompany us from bedtime into the next morning....and the next morning after that! Luckily, there are things we can do to sidestep a negative mood. I have been making it my practice to choose to empower rather than stressful words to describe the tasks ahead of me. Rather than focusing on what I should, ought, or have to do, I remind myself that I'm actually choosing to work on the next item on my list.
I also recommend rewarding yourself with something fun at the end of the day. Appreciating short-term pleasures, like watching Netflix while lying on the couch, is an important part of our everyday lives as it contributes to our well-being and mental health.
As you approach your day, recognize that there is a fine line between excitement and dread. Instead of anticipating all the tough problems, you'll have to solve, ask yourself: what interesting things will happen and which interesting people will I meet today?
Simply breathe, and know that everything is possible, and everything, even this day, is unknown until you live it - Mark Nepo
